What To Do If You Hit Someone With Your Drone

January 13, 2017

Accidents happen. What’s important is knowing what to do once they do. Here at American Heritage Insurance Agency, we know the ins and outs of drone accidents and can help you navigate this new and uncharted area. So, if you accidentally hit someone with your drone, here’s what you should do next.

Don’t Flee the Scene of a Drone Accident

With a drone, it may seem very easy to flee the scene of the drone accident but that’s very illegal. If you flee the scene you’ll eventually be caught and fleeing the scene of a crime leads to exponentially worse legal issues than an innocent drone accident.

Turn off your Drone

Much like a car accident, if you hit someone or something, the first thing you should do is turn off your drone. This will help to prevent any future damage to the victim of the drone accident and the drone itself.

Check on the Victim of the Drone Accident

Obviously, if you’ve hit someone with your drone, you should not run to see if your drone is fine. Check on the victim. Make sure they don’t need medical attention and call it in for them if they do.

Don’t Discuss the Drone Accident with Anyone

It may seem odd, but it is best not to discuss the accident in detail with anyone other than the police, your drone insurance agent, and your attorney. This will ensure you do not incriminate yourself and end up making things worse for your situation.

Take Pictures

As with any accident, when you hit someone with your drone, it is important to take photos of the surrounding area, weather conditions, your drone, and any damage caused to the victim and their property if they allow you to. This will help you down the line if you need to reference anything about the drone accident or if you end up having to go to court.

Co-operate with the Police

Even if the accident was minor, we strongly suggest you contact the police to get written and witnessed statements from both parties. This will protect you from later being charged with a hit-and-run and also ensure the victim is truly okay.

Call your Drone Insurance Company

If you have drone insurance, call your drone insurance company at the next available opportunity. Your drone insurance agent will be able to walk you through what to do next and will also be able to start filing your drone insurance claim.

As with every accident, it’s important to remain calm and use common sense. We suggest you contact your attorney and insurance agency immediately following any drone accident for their advice. Here at
