Auto Insurance Coverage for Historic Vehicles

April 2, 2020

Antique and classic cars are great. Whether you have an old mustang, a Model T, or a 1993 Toyota Corolla, you love driving it around, but many who don’t already own a classic car don’t know that you need special auto insurance coverage for these vehicles.

As someone who’s been providing car insurance in Carroll County, MD for many years, we wanted to take some time today to share a few things you should know about insuring your historic vehicle.

Exactly What Kind of Vehicles Need Special Insurance?

There’s no uniform definition for what an antique or historic vehicle is, but there are some common requirements. Typically, historical vehicles are at least 20 years old, though sometimes they may need to be 25 or 30 years old in order to be considered historic. Additionally, if a car’s value is higher than the original selling price then it may be considered collectible and could be considered for a Carroll County historic auto insurance policy. Here are some of the kinds of vehicles that get covered the most:

  • Classic trucks
  • Muscle cars
  • Exotic and luxury autos
  • Hotrods
  • Modified vehicles

How to Qualify for Classic Car Coverage

The age of a car isn’t the only thing insurance companies take into account when deciding to grant historic or antique status. Most vehicles need to meet most, if not all, of these criteria:

  • Limited Use – Classic cars can’t be used for everyday commuting or errands, and there may be limitations on the mileage allowed. Some insurers may require you to have an additional primary vehicle.
  • Car Shows – Many classic car policies allow for travel to car shows and auto club meet-ups, but you may be required to get some additional specialized coverage. This is something you should check before choosing your Carroll County auto insurance provider.
  • Storage – When you’re not driving your vehicle, you need to have it stored in a locked, enclosed, and secure location. Garages or storage units are commonly used to secure and store classic vehicles.
  • Driving Record – You can be disqualified from receiving classic auto insurance if you’ve ever had any serious offenses on your driving record, such as reckless driving, excessive speeding violations, or driving while intoxicated.
