Do I Need Drone Insurance for Residential Use?

January 2, 2020

These days it seems like you can’t even look up into the sky without seeing a drone zoom by. This may be a bit of an exaggeration, but flying drones has become quite a hobby for many Americans. If you’re a drone enthusiast, then congratulations on finding a cool hobby! But do you know if/how your insurance covers your drone usage?

As an experienced Carroll County drone insurance provider we wanted to take some time today to discuss how drone usage is covered by insurance.

Does Traditional Insurance Cover Drones?

In most cases, your drone will be covered by your homeowners or renters insurance, assuming it is being used only for recreational use, and not anything commercial or illegal. Your drone is considered a model or hobby aircraft under most traditional insurances, and this makes it part of your personal property covered by your insurance. For it to get this consideration though, you must use your drone recreationally at least 90% of the time. Using it commercially, such as to film weddings, is considered business use, and that’s not covered by your home or renters insurance.

What Exactly is Covered Under Traditional Insurance?

The damages that will be covered will be the same as it is for the rest of your personal property. This is known as the “16 common perils”. Fire, theft, vandalism, and wind are some of the most common perils covered by renters and homeowners’ insurance policies. To see what’s covered under your policy, you should contact your insurance provider.

Liability Insurance

The liability coverage you receive under your homeowners or renters insurance should keep you protected up to your coverage limits. It is, however, recommended that you contact your insurer to make sure your policy covers injuries caused by drones. Additionally, you may also run into trouble if someone claims your drone usage has violated their privacy.

Many drones come equipped with cameras and other recording devices, which creates the opportunity for privacy to be breached. If a privacy claim is made against you, your insurance company may be hesitant to defend you.
